This mid-80s slasher film is a cheerfully inexpensive production. Following a tragic accident involving a woman burned at a tanning salon, her sister (Marcia Karr) establishes a gym in Los Angeles, where the clientele begins to meet untimely ends. David Campbell portrays Detective Ted Prior, while Fritz Matthews appears as an odd and imposing client, and Ted Prior is a new employee. “Killer Workout” (1987) centers on a gym located near Hollywood, delivering exactly what you’d anticipate from that premise. There's plenty of footage showcasing the women exercising, primarily through aerobic routines. While it doesn't feature the same kind of actresses as “Heavenly Bodies” (1984), several performers are quite good, including Teresa Van der Woude (as Jaimy) and Dianne Copeland (as Debbie). The film’s music is very much a product of its time, with prominent electronic drums accompanying mostly poor dialogue and acting; however, this feels like the result of everyone involved having a good time on set. Unexpectedly, there's some martial arts action interspersed throughout, along with an extended foot chase. The initial portion feels somewhat limited in scope, focusing solely on happenings at the gym, but the narrative expands considerably in the second half. I found the resolution toward the end to be unexpected. Overall, it’s a modestly budgeted and subtly humorous 80s slasher that manages to be fairly enjoyable. The film's running time is 1 hour, 25 minutes, and filming took place in Beverly Hills, North Hollywood, and Sun Valley, Los Angeles. GRADE: C
