I happened to find Killer Party while searching for horror movies related to April Fool's Day. It’s a slasher film, set in the 80s – seemed promising, right? Sadly, it wasn't what I hoped for. The movie centers on three college students who are trying to join a sorority and must make it through a night in a house where an evil spirit has been released. What disappointed me most was that the deaths could have been genuinely scary, but they weren’t shown very well. Most of them happen off-screen, and the majority occur during the final twenty minutes or so. There wasn't much blood either. I did appreciate the couple of moments where it seemed like something was about to happen, particularly the zombie-like sequence with a band playing. The acting isn’t terrible. Sherry Willis-Burch, who has only appeared in one other horror film, Final Exam, stood out as Vivia – she's portrayed as being both sexually active, intelligent, and interested in special effects. Joanna Johnson, known primarily for her work on The Bold and the Beautiful, plays Jennifer, supposedly the main character. She’s the only one who seems unsure about pledging the sorority initially, and later expresses reluctance to enter the house for the party. Elaine Wilkes, whose previous roles have been limited to television shows outside of horror, portrays Phoebe, a friend who mostly fades into the background with the other sorority sisters. Alicia Fleer, also known primarily from TV work, plays Veronica, the stereotypical mean girl, and at least meets her end by being stabbed with a trident. The film begins with another horror movie playing, then shifts to a couple kissing in a car at a drive-in theater. The woman leaves him to get popcorn and returns to find everyone has turned into zombies while a band is performing – but this turns out to be an elaborate trick. Then we’re introduced to the three friends attempting to rush the sorority. Strange things start happening on initiation night, which are initially dismissed as pranks. Eventually, it becomes April 1st and the sorority hosts an April Fool's Day party at the house. This time, however, the pranks escalate beyond harmless fun; something is killing the guests. The question becomes: who will survive? And who’s responsible for all the deaths? Killer Party commits a major sin for any 80s slasher film – it's dull, and the killings are tame and mostly unseen. It's also fairly easy to guess the identity of the killer before the movie concludes. I only found myself hoping for one character’s survival, which shouldn’t have been the case. If you’re looking for something to put on in the background while you do other things and don’t mind a lackluster slasher, this might work, but keep your expectations very low.
