A group of friends trying to join a sorority decides to play an April Fools’ prank on the other members by turning a nearby abandoned house into a haunted attraction. However, things take a dark turn when a mysterious killer appears, and the remaining survivors must fight for their lives against this dangerous threat. This is certainly one of the best examples of a cheesy slasher film. What makes it so enjoyable is that it fully embraces that style, with an abundance of cheesiness permeating every aspect of the movie. It establishes this right from the start, not being very subtle with the opening scene featuring a short film and the dance number over the credits, although the fraternity members also contribute to the humor as they continue to prank the sorority throughout the beginning, creating some genuinely funny moments. The sequence at the staff meeting begins hilariously and quickly escalates even further, and from the boys’ initial prank to their hazing ritual, then onto the house pranks themselves, all the way to the overall atmosphere and tone, this barely scratches the surface of the film's cheesiness. When it isn't being funny, there are some good slasher moments as well, including the early stalking of the sorority members, the professor’s shocking encounter in the basement, and the fact that almost all of the deaths happen during the party allows it to be over-the-top fun. There’s a lot going on in that scene, with the killer seeming to eliminate someone every few minutes, which makes it feel very fast-paced as nearly the entire cast is taken out quickly. The stalking and supernatural destruction throughout also add excitement. The killer's costume is quite imposing, completely hidden behind an old diving suit that’s large and bulky, giving it a suitably creepy appearance. However, there are some issues with this film despite its undeniable cheesy charm. The most noticeable flaw is the cheesiness itself; while it’s one of the film's strengths, the silliness does create problems. It frequently shifts tone, which can be a little disorienting at times. Also, these inserts interrupt the flow of the movie. While the staff meeting produces some of the funniest gags, it wasn’t necessary, nor were the fraternity’s escapades with the sorority. These just halt the film to provide laughs and don't really add anything substantial beyond that; they could have easily been cut. Furthermore, the film has almost no blood or gore, and all the killings are either bland and bloodless or happen off-screen, which diminishes the impact of the situation. Another significant problem is the ending, which feels rushed and confusing with too much happening and a rapid shift to something else. Those are the real shortcomings of this movie.
