A detective in Memphis (Steven Seagal) rejects permissive legal approaches while pursuing two distinct killers (Mark Collie and Michael Filipowich). His methods and personality are supported by his law enforcement colleague (Chris Thomas King), but an investigating FBI agent expresses serious reservations about both (Holly Dignard). “Kill Switch” (2008) arrived early in Seagal’s third decade of making movies. The era of substantial financial backing and cinema distribution is a distant memory. This was a $5 million direct-to-video action film, and it's frequently criticized as “the worst movie ever made,” among other things. The question becomes whether it succeeds considering its nature—a detective thriller. I found that it did. The fight scenes are prolonged and incorporate rapid editing alongside an energetic soundtrack. Some reviewers have objected to the use of a body double, but this is difficult to notice unless you examine the action slowly, frame by frame (and even then, I struggled to identify a stunt performer). As for the recurring edits, I perceived them as lively and inventive filmmaking. Fortunately, the exciting action is balanced by well-developed characters and solid drama in a screenplay solely written by Seagal. Detective Jacob King (Seagal) proves to be an appealing central figure, and his bond with his partner feels genuine. You’ll want to see them capture the criminal element, while the FBI agent adds another layer of intrigue (for reasons that will become clear). Beyond this, there are several unusual elements included, such as the obscure clues left by the primary serial killer, a stylish librarian, an unconventional bar band, an unexplained woman in an apartment, a humorous anecdote about a clown, and a revealing ending that generates a surprising moment of insight if you pause to consider what’s truly happening. “The Glimmer Man” had a comparable plot but ten times the budget, yet this film proves more enjoyable. Sadly, casual critics find fault with it relentlessly. It has a runtime of 1 hour, 36 minutes, and filming took place in British Columbia (Vancouver, Coquitlam and Langley). GRADE: B
