John Dahl’s entry into neo-noir filmmaking marks the beginning of his career. Kill Me Again is directed by John Dahl, who also co-writes the screenplay with David W. Warfield. The cast includes Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Michael Madsen, Pat Mulligan and Nick Dimitri. William Olvis composed the music, and Jacques Steyn handled the cinematography. Detective Jack Andrews (Kilmer) gets drawn into a situation involving a woman fleeing both the mob and her violent boyfriend. It’s clear that John Dahl appreciates film noir, something we've come to realize over time. He would later direct Red Rock West and The Last Seduction, considered excellent examples of neo-noir cinema. Kill Me Again is his first feature film as a director; like many debuts from filmmakers with a strong preference for a particular genre or style, it suggests greater achievements are possible. Despite being competent within the conventions of noir, the movie feels overly reliant on familiar elements. It follows standard noir patterns: a male protagonist led astray by a mysterious woman, a dangerous and unstable man, some surprising developments, and stylistic choices in camera work and photography. The plot depends on the actions of Whalley's character to create suspense, and for much of the film she is central, but later the story moves past her, leading to a slowdown as Kilmer’s tired private investigator continues his investigation. The actors might be enough to draw some viewers in (although Kilmer doesn’t quite seem right for the role, not matching the quality of neo-noir films he would make later, such as Heat, The Salton Sea, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), but generally the performances are unremarkable – with Madsen being a standout whenever he appears. While the screenplay and script are adequate, they manage to hold your attention until the end. Fans of noir will find enough here to justify watching it, though it’s not something that stays with you afterward. Those who aren't familiar with the genre should consider this purely as entertainment. 6/10
