The sequel surpasses the initial installment considerably. “The Bride” (Uma Thurman) is still pursuing retribution for the death of her fiancé and their child, yet this time around, we aren’t subjected to prolonged, sprawling battles involving numerous characters. It feels much more concentrated and personal. Her confrontation with "Sidewinder" (Michael Madsen) really pushes her limits—particularly her ability to manage fear within an intensely confined space—before “Elle” (Daryl Hannah), wearing an eyepatch, delivers what seems like her strongest performance yet; together they destroy a recreational vehicle using samurai swords and physical force. We gain insight into how she developed her ninja abilities while posing as a student of the grumpy swordsmith and intellectual authority "Hattori Hanzo" (Sonny Chiba), and all of this leads to an unusual resolution with her adversary—the central figure, “Bill” (David Carradine)—who consistently brought back memories of his role as “Grasshopper” in “Kung Fu.” The film moves at a brisk pace, featuring plenty of direct action sequences, humor, a fitting musical score, and some intriguing historical and cultural elements that help to make the story feel more substantial. I believe it represents Thurman’s finest part so far, and this second chapter provides her with considerably greater opportunities to demonstrate her acting capabilities. The script isn't particularly impressive—especially as it approaches its conclusion—but that’s not a significant issue because the adventures, action, and well-developed characters more than make up for it. It is my preferred Tarantino film, without question.
