The movie is secretive but definitely under wraps. Following an attack on her wedding day by people she used to work with, assassin Black Mamba (played by Uma Thurman) awakens from a four-year coma and only wants one thing: payback. With a list of five targets in mind, she begins a violent quest for vengeance. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed what is essentially a tribute to the cinematic styles he loves. Imagine a mix of martial arts films, exploitation movies, samurai stories, Westerns, anime, and old police procedurals—that's the essence of Kill Bill. The film was so large that it had to be split into two parts. While the script isn’t as sharply written as some of his other work, the movie makes up for it with its action sequences and distinctive visual style. And there’s a lot of blood. Thurman is excellent portraying Mamba/The Bride, and having Sonny Chiba & Lucy Liu in the cast adds something special as Tarantino explores a narrative that blends Eastern and Western elements. The film could have been shorter, especially during the middle section where Tarantino creates a sense of quiet before the action really picks up again, but Volume 1 was one of the most thrilling films released in 2003. It demonstrates that Tarantino is skilled at directing action scenes. Perhaps this explains why the dialogue isn’t as clever or stylish as his previous movies? It seems he desires more than just to be known as a “good writer.” It's very entertaining, with an ending that leaves you wanting to see what happens next; bring on part 2... 8/10
