This is the film he created following Jackie Brown. I just wanted to mention that—it’s a big-budget, expansive action movie, intended to shift the course of Tarantino’s filmmaking. And truthfully, it could be my top pick, alongside Pulp Fiction. The film is full of visual flair and features incredibly well-designed fight sequences. There's a section inspired by Japanese animation styles—that was pretty neat. Even when there isn't action happening, things are still really good. Like the casting of someone from those older Street Fighter films as Hatori Hanzo, and the way they depict the creation of the Bride’s sword, plus the amazing music. The opening scene, where the Bride is shot and Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang Bang” plays, is fantastic. However, it's really the stunning fight choreography that makes this movie shine. A lot of it appears in the Crazy 88 battle and the fights leading up to it; there are some clever uses of the visual style on display. They used black and white too, apparently to avoid an NC-17 rating, but it works wonderfully well. And the beautifully filmed fight between the Bride and O-Ren is amplified by the absence of music—it’s quiet and so effective compared to the chaotic Crazy 88 sequence. The opening hand-to-hand combat with Vernita Green is also exceptionally edited. It's a surprising scene, cut short when her daughter arrives home, then it resumes just as quickly before ending with a knife thrust into Vernita’s chest. A truly brilliant and tense moment. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously either—that comes later in the sequel. The fun action and style carry you through. And there are other enjoyable moments like the whistle scene where Elle Driver arrives to kill the Bride while she sleeps, or the interrogation of Sophie. "These will be things you will miss." I really enjoy that line. Honestly, it might just be the best action film of the 2000s—at least in my opinion. And Tarantino has directed a lot of movies I love. Perhaps I’m overly enthusiastic about his films. But even so, this is one of my favorites. Kill Bill Vol 1 earns a perfect score: 10/10
