A young man’s hesitation about killing an animal leads to a confrontation with an older individual, culminating in a fight where another member of their group accidentally shoots what turns out to be their father (Paul Higgins). It becomes apparent early on that “John” (Brian Vernel), along with his brothers "Henry" (Daniel Portman) and "Vince" (Calum Ross), had a plan to eliminate this person. The narrative then uses flashbacks to reveal the reasons behind these young men’s extreme actions, while also showing that getting rid of their target isn't straightforward. As tensions rise within the thick Caledonian forest, the brothers begin to question each other's loyalty, and suspicions arise about who can be trusted. The plot felt familiar; it brought to mind "Mercy Falls," another film from 2023, which relied too heavily on drone shots of old woodlands and unsettling sound effects as a substitute for weak writing and performances, and a storyline that became increasingly unbelievable and drawn out, focusing on three characters I simply didn't connect with. The movie attempts to use its setting to generate danger, but once the story’s pieces started falling into place, I found myself losing interest in what had become an angry and formulaic drama lacking originality or memorable personalities. It’s vital that we keep supporting film production within Scotland, but sweeping views of pine trees don't constitute a good movie, as “Yoda” might put it.
