While dealing with issues regarding custody, “Karla” (Halle Berry) brings her young son “Frankie” (Sage Correa) to the park. During an important phone call, he is taken, and she only catches a glimpse of him being forced into a vehicle. She immediately begins chasing after him, and for ninety minutes we observe her improbable pursuit. Having dropped her phone in the parking lot, she has no way to ask for assistance. Could this be the work of her unhappy former partner? Or perhaps someone on set trying to reduce the boy's screen time? Regardless, Karla refuses to give up as they leave the city and head off somewhere unknown. She does manage a face-to-face encounter at one point and learns that she can retrieve him for $10k, but this plot element is so absurd that it makes you question what Halle Berry found worthwhile in this increasingly unbelievable movie. To her credit, she portrays her character with a sense of urgency and despair as the story unfolds, though the situations are simply outlandish and hard to accept beyond a superficial level. You might not want to cross her when she has access to a shovel, however.
