Wuchak on Kid Galahad

7/10 · Nov 27, 2020

After serving in the military, Elvis Presley returns to his small hometown in upstate New York seeking work as a mechanic. He gets drawn into boxing by a questionable manager who also runs an inn, and he also attracts the attention of the man’s sister. Under the guidance of his trainer, he swiftly rises to become a popular champion known as Kid Galahad, but then organized crime attempts to take over. Lola Albright portrays the innkeeper's partner and helper. "Kid Galahad," released in 1962, was Elvis’ tenth film out of the thirty-one he made during his acting career. I tend to enjoy Elvis’ more dramatic movies, such as "Roustabout," which came out in 1964, compared to the lighter comedies like "Spinout" from 1966; and this one leans toward the former. Although boxing is central to the narrative, it's not similar to films like “Rocky” or “Southpaw,” both of which are set in cities. What makes "Kid Galahad" unique is its setting—the beautiful lodge nestled in the mountains. The film claims to be located in the Catskills or perhaps the Adirondacks, but it’s clear that filming took place out West. Nevertheless, the scenery is superb. Furthermore, the story has a dramatic and engaging quality, along with an appealing sense of connection among the main characters. The movie's length is 1 hour and 35 minutes; it was filmed in Idyllwild, California, with studio filming occurring in Culver City. GRADE: B
