Jean-Claude Van Damme isn't known for his acting ability, but he’s undeniably skilled in martial arts, and that has been evident across many of his films. Although this movie had instances showcasing those skills, I ended up feeling somewhat let down. Certain parts leading up to the main events were enjoyable. Tong Po seemed genuinely intimidating, and while Winston Taylor felt a little corny at first, I did come to appreciate him. Eric Sloanes character came off as unlikeable; perhaps that’s necessary for a champion, but he didn't seem believable. The majority of the film resembles an extended training sequence before the climactic fight. There were some entertaining scenes during those training sessions, though much of it felt tedious. The romantic subplot also fell flat, especially given the quality of the performances. I had hoped the final confrontation would be different; it was very obvious what was going to happen and lacked real intensity, even with attempts at adjustments. Ultimately, I wanted more from this film than what it delivered. 5/10
