It’s disappointing, really. *Kick-Ass 2* isn’t inherently bad, but it seems misguided in almost every aspect—or maybe my expectations were just off. To me, the story feels like something that would have been better suited for the first film in a franchise, not a sequel. It focuses on developing characters, and I believe a follow-up should primarily advance the overall storyline. It’s also considerably less enjoyable. The original *Kick-Ass* had a playful energy and embraced it; this one falls flat trying to be more serious—a choice that didn't land well with me. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloë Grace Moretz seemed out of sync as well, at least when compared to their previous performances. Jim Carrey feels like he’s being underutilized; this is probably the most easily forgotten performance I’ve seen from him—and that’s saying something. It does offer a glimpse of a different kind of role for him, I suppose. Olga Kurkulina delivers a solid portrayal of her character, and Iain Glen makes an impression despite having a small part. There are also some irritating (though not major) casting changes, which is always frustrating for me. Ultimately, I hoped to like this film, but I simply didn’t. It feels like a chance that was squandered.
