As a storm gathers, Frank (Humphrey Bogart) goes to visit Temple (Lionel Barrymore), the father of his deceased friend, at a hotel, only to discover that the management has changed. Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson) is hiding out there as part of an escape plan, and a tense situation develops within the hotel’s walls. Nora, the widow of Frank's friend, seems very cautious, while Claire Trevor manages to stand out repeatedly in her role as Gaye, the intoxicated girlfriend. It really is a gripping thriller. The dialogue is economical and sharp, and the sound design contributes significantly to the mounting suspense, with excellent performances from Barrymore, Bogart—who delivers a restrained but powerful performance—and Robinson, who’s doing exactly what he does well. There's a lot of energy between the actors, and the ending provides a final, dangerous clash! This is film noir at its finest, and seeing it on a large screen would be worthwhile.
