A tempest is gathering in Key Largo, but the real turmoil stems from within James Temple’s struggling hotel. Here, an elderly man with a physical disability, his daughter-in-law, and a former soldier who has lost his way are captives of Johnny Rocco, a well-known criminal. What does he desire? According to him, he wants "more." And it's clear that both his anger and his weapon could explode without warning. It would be wise for Mr. Temple to avoid pushing him. This exceptional, suspenseful film noir is, in my view, among the finest works by director John Huston. Though some regard it as a less significant collaboration between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, it remains an outstanding movie that deserves your attention. Highlights include Claire Trevor’s performance as Rocco's intoxicated girlfriend, who sings for him while pleading for alcohol, and the spirited exchanges between the self-assured Rocco and the resilient Mr. Temple. Should you watch it? Absolutely.
