It’s likely my best experience seeing Telly Savalas in a film, as he takes on the role of joining his similarly named lieutenant (Clint Eastwood) for a risky trek through hostile territory. Amidst constant explosions, their unit seizes a German officer who discloses the location of a bank in the French countryside containing gold – specifically, $16 million worth. The question then becomes how to acquire it. To assist, the resourceful "Kelly" brings in the assistance of quartermaster and scavenger "Crapgame" (Don Rickles), the appropriately named and unusual tank commander "Oddball" (Donald Sutherland), and abandons the captain's boat to the dangers of bombing raids; this unlikely group then begins their mission. Their advancement proves remarkably easy, which causes some frustration for "Gen. Colt" (Carroll O’Connor), who believes they are a team of brave soldiers deserving of awards – and he soon starts chasing them without realizing their questionable motives. When they reach the town, they find it guarded by heavily armed Tiger tanks, and the building containing the gold is strongly protected. The challenge now becomes how to eliminate the tanks, retrieve the gold, and avoid destroying the entire village. Eastwood manages to keep this adventure on track, but it’s truly a collaborative effort with Sutherland and Savalas performing well alongside Troy Kennedy Martin's spirited characters and writing. Director Brian Hutton also maintains a brisk tempo, featuring plenty of action sequences, occasional cans of pink paint, and an exciting final confrontation. Could they pull it off? We might be anticipating a follow-up at this point!
