“Liz” (Tatiana Maslany) joins her doctor boyfriend “Malcolm” (Rossif Sutherland) for a weekend retreat in a remote area. His home isn't your average cabin; it’s quite luxurious, and there's also a cousin nearby (Birkett Turton), though she is told he won't intrude on their time away. Initially, everything appears pleasant—they even find a chocolate cake left by the caretaker. However, when Malcolm has to return unexpectedly for a medical situation, leaving Liz alone, unsettling events begin to occur. It’s unclear whether it's the cake or red wine affecting her perception, if the sounds are simply natural occurrences, or if it stems from an overactive imagination or the mysterious presence of “Darren.” Upon Malcolm’s return, it becomes evident that nothing about this seemingly perfect place is what it appears to be, and Liz finds herself in a progressively unsettling situation. The film functions as a technically proficient thriller, showcasing inventive cinematography and skillful sound design. However, the narrative itself feels underdeveloped, and the lead actors fail to truly connect with their roles. There's an extended period—roughly eighty minutes—of relatively little happening, leading to a resolution that felt rushed and disappointing—unless you’re imagining something like “Winnie the Pooh” after meeting “Grendel.” The wilderness continues to be a reliable setting for mystical horror stories, but compelling characters are essential for audience investment, and this film lacks that depth.
