The premise is pretty evident from the keywords alone, so I won't go into that. A large portion of this film feels like it’s catering to fans—lots of nods to (female) Max Payne (the original, not the clunky 2008 movie), Agent 47, John Wick, and even Leon ("all versions"). It doesn’t have a particularly complex plot, but the action sequences are well-executed and filmed. The modern Japanese setting is also nicely done. I received exactly what I was hoping for: an enjoyable action film. That's likely what Netflix wanted when they greenlit it based on my viewing history. However, what truly made this movie worthwhile were a few brief moments of genuine acting. Winstead excels in the Terminator/Max Payne/Leon/Wick/McClane-esque action sequences, and she demonstrates her value as the lead when given an opportunity to act. But it was Jun Kunimura’s performance that really resonated with me; he conveyed so much emotion in a short amount of screen time, and that's what ultimately made me appreciate this movie. (The supporting cast also delivered strong performances.) It's not as poor as the reviews suggest; it's simply stylish entertainment.
