The film draws inspiration from actual events and centers on the experiences of television weather forecaster “Chris” (Ryan Corr). He'd been complaining to his producer, "Liz" (Brooke Satchwell), about feeling stuck in a job with no prospects, so she challenged him to demonstrate his value. A chance arises when he saves a baby dolphin that’s become stranded near Bondi Beach. However, this initial moment of triumph is fleeting as the animal turns up dead on the beach the following day. Now branded a "dolphin killer" online and subsequently dismissed from his job, he takes whatever employment he can find elsewhere in the country. During his travels, further misfortune occurs – he accidentally hits a kangaroo! Inside its pouch is a tiny joey, which he rescues and brings to a nearby town, where he encounters young “Charlie” (Lily Whiteley). She has always felt connected to kangaroos and, while grieving her recently deceased father, tends to various injured animals she discovers. "Chris" intends only to pass the joey along, but she explains a local tradition, and with his car disabled after the accident, he’s obligated to remain and connect with the community. The narrative that follows is fairly straightforward, yet it remains an enjoyable experience, blending moments of levity with themes of compassion and togetherness. A standout character is "Roger," a kangaroo whom “Chris” saves from being slaughtered, only to discover that his actions aren't necessarily appreciated. It occasionally veers into sentimentality, particularly during the final scenes, but Corr and Whiteley have good chemistry together, and there’s ample humor derived from a supporting ensemble who playfully subvert common perceptions of people living in Australia’s remote interior.
