One misstep could have resulted in serious injury or even death. After watching, I was genuinely struck by it. That reaction can mean different things—perhaps the movie was visually impressive, raw, and possibly the best war film released in 2014. I’m confident in that assessment, at least based on what I've seen. It's a low-budget British war drama-thriller rooted in an actual event that occurred in Afghanistan in 2006. The director comes from a documentary background, and I’m glad he chose to adapt it into a film; it still feels somewhat like a documentary, but with considerable impact. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the Kajaki dam valley, where a British army camp is situated on a mountainside. One morning, a military unit goes out for a routine patrol of the surrounding area. An unforeseen tragedy occurs, followed by a series of unfortunate events that leave the entire team in a precarious situation, as do other teams sent to help. They risk their lives attempting to rescue each other. Transported from England and lying under the intense sun while injured, they must have felt like they were experiencing something akin to hell. The rest of the narrative then emerges—or does it? I agree with others who’ve described this as a difficult film to watch. Because everything feels so authentic, there are moments when you can almost feel the pain if you're paying close attention. Especially for those with compassionate natures, your pulse might quicken. It isn’t entirely predictable; while we get an idea of what will happen after the initial incident, the “how,” “where,” and “when” remain questions. Anything could occur at any time—the screenplay is true to that. Once the moments of intense suspense begin, they are relentless, frequently pulling you forward in your seat. > "This whole country is full of sht > left behind when armies fkd off." The entire film was shot on a single location and its immediate surroundings. While the story takes place in Afghanistan, filming occurred in Jordan. The locations were exceptionally well utilized, as were the camera angles; the performances were outstanding. I don’t recognize any of the actors, but they delivered superb work. You won't easily forget this film after you've seen it—at least for a week or so. There’s no need to compare it with American war movies. This isn't about high-tech military combat; it’s simply a story centered around one extraordinary circumstance. What is truly unsettling is the knowledge that it’s based on a real event. The unit was small, and headquarters failed to provide them with proper equipment—functional radios, metal detectors, etc.—which contributed to the disaster. War isn't always about grabbing your weapon and going after enemies like John Rambo; there are different kinds of warfare fought in different ways. In this film, these young soldiers were focused on monitoring enemy movements near a checkpoint. They unexpectedly walked into a trap, and afterward, it’s all about human emotions. I don't recall seeing a better war film from Britain, at least not recently. This film completely surprised me, which is unexpected for an obscure title. As usual, taking chances with lesser-known films has given me the opportunity to discover a hidden gem, and I want to share this experience as widely as possible. If you're reading this, especially if you’re an adult, I highly recommend it. Don't expect constant action sequences, but it delivers completely on the themes explored within its narrative. 9/10
