I’m looking back at a movie that came out quite a while ago. The subject matter feels very familiar now, especially in Hollywood productions. It's surprising to think Ryan Reynolds made something like this so early in his career. Essentially, it seems designed just for entertainment; there isn't much more to anticipate from it. We’re already aware of the story’s start and finish, but the film focuses on what happens in between, particularly how the comedic elements are handled. The acting is generally fine; Amy Smart stands out as a better actress than she seems to be currently. Ryan Reynolds' use of different costumes worked well, and Anna Faris was great during the humorous scenes. It might lean toward being a film geared towards women, or something similar, but the story unfolds from a male point of view. The movie tracks the transformation of someone who was awkward in high school into an attractive man. When he returns to his hometown, old memories resurface, especially when he sees a former friend whom he had a crush on but never confessed his feelings to. It's presented as his second, and possibly last, opportunity to express those emotions. The rest of the story involves how that unfolds. As a comedy, it doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking. I might have enjoyed it more if I'd seen it when it was first released. Not everyone watching will find it entirely satisfying. It’s difficult to recommend this film widely, but if you want some lighthearted humor, it’ll probably be acceptable. And again, don't expect too much; even some of the jokes are a bit commonplace, though they do try their best. It’s an average comedy, but a decent way to spend some time. _5/10_
