The film "Just Before Dawn," released in 1981, combines elements of "Friday the 13th" with “Deliverance.” The following year's "Trapped," also known as "Baker County, USA," seems to have drawn inspiration from it. While I consider this the weakest of these four films, it’s still quite effective and much better than the film “Don’t Go in the Woods,” which is a poor representation of its kind. It likely influenced movies like "The Final Terror,” "Berserker” and “Blood Hook," though those aren't as good. What works well here? The Oregon locations are striking, and the dramatic events unfold with a level of quality that’s supported by a cast of largely unknown actors—with the exception of George Kennedy. Similar to “Madhouse” (1981), there’s an aspect present that wouldn't become common in slasher films until "Scream" fifteen years later. Deborah Benson, as Constance, or Connie, is another highlight. Initially, she appears as a fairly ordinary blonde girl, but her character transforms into the main protagonist during the second half of the movie. I won’t elaborate further, except to note that she undergoes an interesting transformation, similar to what happens in “Lord of the Flies.” Jamie Rose, who plays Megan, is also worth noting; she resembles Nicole Kidman eight years before Kidman became widely known with "Dead Calm." The character Merry Cat, a girl with inbred characteristics, adds another layer. The film’s runtime is 1 hour and 30 minutes, and it was filmed at Silver Falls State Park, which sits about thirty minutes east of Salem, Oregon, and an hour south of Portland. GRADE: B
