It feels like there are countless films depicting the world's demise, and this one suggests that if Earth grew tired of humanity and its harmful practices, it could easily wipe us out without much difficulty. Here, Paris becomes the setting for an apocalypse as a lethal fog rises from the ground, filling every building and killing everything in its path. “Mathieu” (played by Romain Duris) and his family are fortunate enough to reside in an apartment building high above the ground, keeping them safe from the pervasive mist—at least temporarily. He’s not solely concerned with his own safety; his wife, “Anna” (Olga Kurylenko, who has very limited screen time), their daughter “Sarah” (Fantine Harduin), and his parents are also with him. As resources dwindle, they must descend to street level to search for food—navigating a progressively desperate situation. What will become of them when the gas begins to accumulate? I’m fond of Duris; he's typically an engaging performer who usually provides a solid performance, and here he elevates what is admittedly a fairly unremarkable screenplay into a character that viewers can connect with. At first, I questioned whether it was unjust that those living in luxury apartments would be spared, but then I realized their purpose was to slowly succumb to starvation or dehydration—which felt acceptable. The film’s limited budget means there's no extravagant display of visual effects, which I thought contributed to a more unsettling and realistic atmosphere. Certain scenes toward the conclusion evoked memories of “Titanic.” It demonstrates that Hollywood doesn’t have to dominate existential dramas, and this one surpasses many others, in my opinion.
