Nicholas Hoult portrays “Justin,” a man anticipating fatherhood who finds himself unexpectedly called for jury duty, hoping to quickly return home to his wife. The court selects him, however, and he’s thrust into a murder trial involving a man accused of killing his girlfriend following an altercation at a bar. "Faith," the prosecutor with ambitions for higher office (played by Toni Collette), seems confident of a straightforward case, but defense lawyer “Resnick” (Chris Messina) has reservations. As the trial begins, the second juror experiences something unsettling; some of the presented evidence is strikingly vivid. The more he learns about the crime, the clearer it becomes that his role as a juror might be deeply connected to him personally. Despite the urging from his wife and other jurors to simply conclude the proceedings, he struggles to thoroughly examine the evidence, eventually gaining the assistance of fellow juror "Harold" (J.K. Simmons). Their investigation raises questions about what they may uncover and how it could influence the prosecutor’s pursuit of truth. I believe Hoult carries the film effectively, and even as details emerge regarding the events surrounding the crime, director Clint Eastwood maintains a compelling rhythm and suspense that presents viewers with a significant moral quandary as revelations surface and loyalties are challenged. Simmons delivers solid support, as do Collette and Messina, but Kiefer Sutherland’s appearance is too brief to significantly affect the narrative; ultimately, it falls to us and "Juror #2" to grapple with the unfolding events and our own sense of right and wrong.
