Dinosaurs captivated me when I was little, so I was really excited about the first Jurassic Park movie—a film I considered excellent then, and still do. Unfortunately, the movies that followed have been quite uneven. This one, though, definitely landed in the “what a letdown” category. It's clear whoever wrote it just threw together old ideas and typical Hollywood tropes, then tacked on some irritating lectures too. The scenes featuring Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) simply sitting around talking at length were enough to knock off a star or two. The message was obvious: the writer dislikes genetic science. If you want to express that opinion, write an article for a scientific journal or something. But it wouldn’t be accepted because there's no actual science in it—just rambling mixed with poorly disguised religious beliefs. So instead, they ruined a movie that should have just been entertaining. And then there’s the rest of the story. The kindest thing I can say about it is “predictable.” How many times are we going to see the plot where a corporation captures animals for profit? At least try to make the story clever if you're going to recycle it repeatedly. It’s even been done before within this same series! I won’t pretend that I didn’t find some enjoyment in watching, though. Most of it came from appreciating the scenery and special effects—those were pretty good. I always enjoy seeing giant monsters causing destruction and eating people, especially when those victims are bad guys. There were a few genuinely funny moments. Chris Pratt, and most of the other actors, did about as well as could be expected given the poor script. The idea of using a Stygimoloch to escape was pretty cool, and the chaos it caused was amusing. But the scene where Wheatley paused amidst all the mayhem to pull out a tooth as some sort of trophy was just ridiculous. The ending felt incredibly frustrating. Whoever wrote that should be fired. Dinosaurs escape, and the takeaway is that humans are supposed to coexist with dinosaurs from now on. What nonsense! Despite this being a genre I love and the special effects being well-done, this film didn’t work for me because of the script's lack of intelligence and effort.
