Peter McGinn on Jurassic World Dominion

6/10 · Aug 7, 2022

I’ve now experienced the first four installments of this series—three of which I've rewatched multiple times—and finally saw this latest one. There are parallels and distinctions between *Dominion* and the earlier films. It included some familiar components: a vulnerable child, the heroes (even her) escaping dinosaurs in a flurry of panic, people serving as dinosaur fodder, and nods to the initial theme park that began everything. They really went all out this time—watch for the Barbasol shaving cream canister. However, there are also significant differences. Certain sections felt almost disconnected from what I’d come to expect from the franchise. The story attempts to weave together storylines about dinosaurs, the morality of genetic modification, a child being taken, corporate wrongdoing, and, in my opinion, the most compelling subplot connected to the original film: the challenge of humans and dinosaurs sharing a new world order. A change is that there are two romantic relationships developing throughout. It was good to see familiar faces return; Ellie Sattler and Alan Grant are back, and Ian Malcolm appears just long enough to deliver some characteristic remarks, which was more than in the previous film. Overall, I found *Dominion* diverting enough to keep watching, although the elements that seemed designed to provoke thought were a bit of a distraction.
