A military unit, under the command of Captain Steakley (Gary Stretch), is sent into the South American jungle on a mission to recover an imprisoned scientist (Natascha Berg). They also end up taking a Latino activist who opposes capitalism (Israel Sáez de Miguel) into custody. During their escape, the helicopter they’re traveling in crashes within a 60-mile forested crater—a secluded prehistoric ecosystem isolated from the modern world. Michael Worth portrays an eccentric professor who has been living alone inside this lost realm for several years. Initially known as "Jurassic Attack," "Rise of the Dinosaurs" (2013) shares similarities with other films produced by The Asylum, such as “Isle of the Dead” (2016), "King of the Lost World" (2005), and "The Land that Time Forgot" (2009). The most significant drawback is the computer-generated imagery; while the dinosaurs themselves are acceptable for a film with limited funding, the lighting and movement occasionally don’t align well with the rest of the visuals. The blood visibly flowing from the t-rex's mouth is particularly unconvincing, but perhaps that’s to be expected given the nature of this type of production. The movie functions effectively as a survival story featuring a reasonably engaging cast of characters and one primary adversary. Natascha Berg is striking throughout the film in simple shorts, while Alicia Ziegler delivers a solid performance and displays impressive action skills. Michael Worth's portrayal of the professor suggests an academic with hippie tendencies who has discovered his ideal sanctuary. Although Israel Sáez de Miguel’s depiction of the character leans toward caricature, the script surprisingly provides him with a noteworthy moment where he defends his communist beliefs and criticizes capitalism. The film’s length is 1 hour and 23 minutes, and it was filmed in Belize. GRADE: C+
