Elliot Page delivers a noteworthy and believable portrayal in the central role. The narrative centers on a young woman who persuades her somewhat impressionable and sentimental boyfriend, referred to as "Bleeker" (played by Michael Cara), into having intimacy. Following a pregnancy, she chooses not to terminate the pregnancy and subsequently arranges for the baby's adoption by "Mark" (Jason Bateman) and his wife, “Vanessa” (Jennifer Garner), who seem preoccupied with certain fixations. The majority of the film unfolds as this young woman navigates her pregnancy, grapples with her relationship with her parents, and develops a connection with "Mark." It’s through this later progression that she begins to recognize not only issues within Mark's marriage but also her own feelings regarding herself, her unborn child, and its father. The movie presents an amusing and occasionally poignant examination of her personal growth; even though the ending feels somewhat underwhelming, it remains a pleasant experience overall. Allison Janney and JK Simmons are effective together as her parents, bringing a touch of humorous realism to the situation of their daughter’s pregnancy—not drug use. The script is well-crafted, featuring dialogue that's often laced with sarcasm and possesses an agreeable sense of authenticity, frequently eliciting amusement.
