JUNIPER tells a touching story that blends comedy and drama, centering on a troubled young man named Sam who finds himself responsible for his spirited grandmother, Ruth, who struggles with alcohol. I’ve not always found Charlotte Rampling particularly captivating in past roles, but she delivers a truly impressive performance as Ruth; she's genuinely funny, uses colorful language, and is surprisingly endearing. George Ferrier also stands out as Sam, whose character gradually improves through his time spent with Ruth. The bond between these two characters forms the core of JUNIPER, depicted beautifully as it evolves from animosity into affection and mutual regard. The film comes from director Matthew J Saville, who’s also credited with writing the script; this marks his debut feature, and he manages to create a successful work. The movie unfolds at a good speed and doesn't drag or become tedious. The lines are clever and frequently quite amusing. I appreciated the music as well, which complements the film very nicely. The visuals are striking, and the editing is top-notch. I really liked JUNIPER. While there are some darker scenes throughout, it’s ultimately a positive story about family connections, affection, and second chances. I would suggest seeing this movie.
