A solid movie with a truly impressive central performance. The plot is engaging even for those unfamiliar with the world of Rodeo, and I believe it’s a narrative that most people will find easy to connect with. The main character, portrayed exceptionally by Steve McQueen, goes back to his hometown of Prescott, Arizona, only to discover that his family has fallen apart and that time has taken its toll on him and his career in Rodeo. It's an uneven film that doesn’t initially appear to be a typical work from Sam Peckinpah. However, there are some worthwhile surprises to appreciate. I haven't experienced a Rodeo firsthand, so I can’t judge how authentic the scenes are, but they were captivating for me; in fact, I found myself completely absorbed by them. The film also includes several well-developed and intriguing characters who are brought to life effectively by the actors. Ida Lupino, Robert Preston & Ben Johnson all contribute significantly to raising the movie above mediocrity, yet it’s McQueen's powerful lead performance that truly stands out and warrants a more substantial story to support it. I’d give the film as a whole a 7/10, but Steve McQueen delivers an affecting and profound portrayal that deserves a perfect score of 10/10.
