It’s an unremarkable movie, though it benefits greatly from a truly outstanding central performance. The plot is engaging enough to hold the attention of people who aren't particularly invested in the world of Rodeo, and I believe most audiences will find something to connect with in the narrative. The main character, portrayed exceptionally by Steve McQueen, goes back to his hometown of Prescott, Arizona, only to discover that his family has fallen apart and that time has taken its toll on him and his career. The film is uneven, and at first glance doesn't seem like something directed by Sam Peckinpah. However, there are some very rewarding moments to be found. I’ve never experienced a Rodeo firsthand so I can’t judge how authentic the scenes feel, but they certainly resonated with me; in fact, I was completely captivated by them. The film also includes several interesting and well-developed characters, brought to life effectively by the actors involved. Ida Lupino, Robert Preston & Ben Johnson all contribute significantly to raising the quality of the movie, but ultimately it's Steve McQueen’s deeply moving lead performance that really stands out—he delivers a portrayal worthy of a stronger film. I’d give the film 7/10 overall, though Steve McQueen’s performance alone earns a full 10/10.
