It’s not as terrible as one might think. _Some spoilers ahead:_ Four characters, who aren't particularly well-motivated, venture into the jungle; one is called Hairy Potter. From the start, you find yourself hoping the environment will eliminate them, but that doesn't actually occur. The film squanders a chance to be compelling. It could have included survival elements like constructing shelter, purifying water, starting fires, locating food sources, dealing with dangerous animals, interpersonal conflict, identifying a threat, and romantic interests... Instead, it’s presented as a "true story," which is dull, slow-paced, and lacks any real resolution. We instead see a monkey shot from a tree, killed, consumed near an already established campfire without even dismantling it. It's shocking that the actor portraying Hairy Potter lost weight for this production. The performances, cinematography, musical score, action sequences, and visual effects are all well done. However, these strengths aren’t enough to elevate the movie beyond a middling 2.5 stars. If you’re adapting a true story and it proves uninteresting, find ways to make it engaging; don't simply recreate events. 28 October 2017 I am moving my reviews from another platform that has become unusable.
