RADIO1'S MR. MOVIE!-MAD AMI 🌠 on Jungle Cruise

10/10 · Aug 9, 2021

If you can get past the overwhelming amount of mud, slime, and bugs—including hundreds of bees—you’ll discover that the film’s lengthy buildup and eventual grand finale are truly spectacular. This is a journey filled with color, beauty, awe, drama, massive spectacle, and most importantly, heart. There's also plenty of humor. Dwayne Johnson, as Frank Wolff, delivers so many genuinely rib-tickling spur-of-the-moment puns in *Jungle Cruise* that I honestly couldn’t help but get drawn in almost every time. Not to mention the masterfully executed slapstick comedy you can see a taste of in the movie's "Official Trailer 1" from August 2020. Overall, expect two hours and seven minutes of lavish, wholesome family entertainment. Does he still charm, endear, and delight? Yes, he can and does rock the boat. However, don’t expect an Oscar-worthy performance from Dwayne Johnson; you'll just get the same familiar American accent while playing a Spaniard living in Brazil—though that was likely a directorial choice by the outstanding director, Jaume Collet-Serra. Expect a thorough and dedicated performance with some impressive surprises. Emily Blunt as Lily Houghton and Jack Whitehall as MacGregor Houghton are incredibly fun to watch; these talented stars are adorable, charming, and delightful in this post-Victorian setting. Jesse Plemons was the marvelous shock of this huge movie—at least for me. He portrays the monstrous German Prince Joachim, a nightmare straight out of World War I. In real life, he’s Kirsten Dunst's partner. Despite not being much of a *Breaking Bad* fan, I somehow missed his sixty-three acting roles until seeing him play Jimmy Ord in *Battleship*. Now, to see him take on this larger-than-life role and play it with class—and don’t even get me started about his German accent—his performance was gloriously, gleefully, and mischievously immaculate. Before we part ways, I should mention that I actually went on the real cruise at Disneyland in Anaheim with my late father on his 50th birthday. I was too young to remember it, so this film had a special meaning for me. If not for all the gross mud, slime, and bees, I might have given this film my trademark 12 or even 13 out of 10. However, because that stuff bothered me, it remains a solid 10 out of 10. Still not too shabby, wouldn’t you reckon?
