Many people who’ve experienced Disney parks will tell you that the Jungle Cruise is among their favorite rides. Walt Disney poured his heart into this project, and it has entertained countless visitors with its beautiful scenery, animated animals, and the often-uncomfortable jokes delivered by the skippers, contributing to its lasting appeal. Given that attractions like “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “The Haunted Mansion,” and “The Tower of Terror” have already made their way to the big screen—along with several others over time—it wasn’t surprising when news came out about The Jungle Cruise following suit. Despite a few changes in release dates, followed by a significant delay due to Covid, the film has finally arrived, complete with a star-studded premiere at Disneyland. The story centers on Doctor Lilly Houghton (Emily Blunt), who, along with her brother MacGregor (Jack Whitehall), sets out to find a legendary artifact and gain acceptance into an exclusive group; however, they face obstacles because of the prevailing sexism in early 1900s England and are compelled to steal something and race to the Amazon. Pursued by a dangerous adversary, Prince Joachim (Jesse Plemons), along with his henchmen, Lilly and her brother end up traveling with a boat captain named Frank (Dwayne Johnson). He’s desperate for money and employs various tactics to secure a charter and guide them into a perilous region. Throughout their journey, they encounter humor, action, and danger in the form of hostile tribespeople, wild animals, treacherous rapids, and Prince Joachim's relentless pursuit. Adding another layer of complexity is a curse that presents an even greater threat than previously imagined. As time runs out, Frank and Lilly must learn to rely on each other, decipher clues, and prevent evil forces from prevailing. The film takes some time to find its footing; while there’s plenty of action and impressive scenery, it initially seems uncertain about the kind of movie it wants to be or what story it intends to tell. Is it a lighthearted adventure with a touch of romance? Is it an effects-driven action comedy? Or perhaps an over-the-top action film reminiscent of classic cinematic adventures? Ultimately, the film is a combination of all those elements. I recognized echoes of “The African Queen,” “Romancing the Stone,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Pirates of The Caribbean”, and “The Mummy” while watching it. Although the plot device driving the story might leave some viewers with more questions than answers, Blunt and Johnson have great chemistry together, and Whitehall's performance adds depth to his character, making him more than just comic relief. The special effects are well-done, and the film successfully blends humor and action, incorporating some of the best jokes from the original ride. Despite appearing at first glance to be a standard adventure movie, it combines a strong cast with an entertaining story that recalls classic tales of derring-do while giving them a fresh, modern feel. 4 stars out of 5
