JUNG_E will likely surprise audiences. Rather than a traditional war story, Yeon Sang-ho sets the action of this post-apocalyptic film in the periphery, choosing to explore themes about humanity and centering the narrative around an emotional connection between a mother and daughter. While hampered by occasionally exaggerated acting choices and one particularly annoying character, the movie’s message is sincere, straightforward, and impactful. The plot suffers from some drawn-out explanations and uneven special effects that fail to improve upon its familiar storyline, but well-executed action choreography, a powerful musical score, and several truly absorbing fight scenes contribute to an ultimately enjoyable experience.
