This Australian film enters familiar territory—the story of a parent dealing with dementia—but distinguishes itself through an unexpected element that significantly impacts the narrative. This detail is revealed early on, as it’s highlighted in promotional materials, so its disclosure doesn't detract from the core experience. June, who has been living with dementia following several strokes, suddenly returns to her former self. The title reflects this: she is once again simply June, rather than a woman disconnected from those around her. Essentially, for her, it’s as if she jumped forward five years, though naturally everyone else aged during that time too. She remains the same person she was when she essentially vanished from their lives, so it's not unexpected that old conflicts and disagreements with her children resurface, exacerbated by what transpired while she was unaware. The writing and performances are consistently good throughout, but Noni Hazlehurst particularly deserves recognition as the film concludes. While generally delivering a believable portrayal, she truly excels in those moments where her character fluctuates between dementia and clarity. These scenes convey an unspoken understanding of her internal struggles and experiences. There's another development concerning June’s history that I won’t detail, but it also contributes to the story’s originality. Aside from a somewhat improbable and cheerful resolution, this is difficult material to conclude satisfactorily. However, the writer/director skillfully depicts a realistic outcome for June’s situation, managing to maintain an optimistic tone despite the circumstances. JJ Winlove, from New Zealand, wrote and directed the film, having previously created a collection of twelve short films. I hope he'll be given another opportunity to work on a feature-length project.
