Seriously, what’s going on? The film had an incredibly troubled production history; there were significant issues including a director change—Penny Marshall took over from Howard Zieff—and so many writers contributed that you could field an entire hockey team just from their names. Consequently, Jumpin' Jack Flash feels somewhat unclear and incomplete. The story involves Whoopi Goldberg playing a computer programmer who gets pulled into the world of spying after receiving a distress signal on her screen. From there, she follows directions from someone insisting he’s imprisoned in Eastern Europe, which results in several entertaining moments as she pretends to know what she's doing while navigating a shady criminal environment. Will she manage to survive? Who exactly are these secret agents? And can the man communicating with her through the computer be trusted? The answers will appear during a fairly standard 1980s action-comedy, which works reasonably well because Goldberg is an entertaining comedic performer who keeps things engaging. It’s certainly not groundbreaking or particularly clever, but it offers a diverting glimpse into the early days of computers in the eighties and provides decent entertainment if you're looking for something undemanding to watch. 6/10
