I was probably about twenty minutes into it when I realized Kirsten Dunst was there, keeping her frightened younger brother "Peter" (Bradley Pierce) company as they stumbled upon a rather fancy-looking board game in their new house. We’re told this place used to belong to the “Parrish” family and that playing the same game, twenty-five years prior, young “Alan” had an accident which created a mystery that still lingers. So, these two kids start playing and quickly discover it's nothing like Clue or Monopoly. This one has a habit of spitting out strange rhymes after each turn, followed by lions, monkeys, dangerous mosquitoes – basically anything that can destroy the town, their house, and the brand new police car of the increasingly stressed “Officer Bentley” (David Alan Grier). Fortunately, "Peter" rolls a five, which brings them face-to-face with the long-lost lad (Robin Williams), now grown up, covered in leaves, and skilled at playing the game from within. All they have to do is find his old gaming partner (Bonnie Hunt) and finish the game. What could possibly go wrong? Well, besides all the destruction, the game also introduces them to the shotgun-wielding, “Quatermain”-like "Van Pelt" (Jonathan Hyde), who seems set on turning everyone into trophies for his collection. Now they need to survive, complete the game, and hopefully fix a few things. There’s no real sense of danger, but Williams, Dunst, and enthusiastic Pierce keep this fast-moving family adventure moving at a good clip. It's true that Williams tended to go overboard with his characters, but the kids and Hyde work well as a contrast to that, and each dice roll easily introduces a new chaotic situation for them as they try to reach the finish line. It’s enjoyable entertainment for families that feels like “Smokey and the Bandit” mixed with "Tarzan" and has stood the test of time pretty well.
