I was only about twenty minutes into watching when it struck me – it was Kirsten Dunst playing the older sibling, keeping her frightened younger brother "Peter" (Bradley Pierce) close as they find an unusually stylish board game in their new house. We’re told this place used to belong to the “Parrish” family and that a generation earlier, young “Alan” had an accident while playing the same game, creating a mystery that still lingers. The two kids start playing and quickly discover it's nothing like Clue or Monopoly; instead, it has a habit of offering strange rhymes after each turn, followed by lions, monkeys, dangerous mosquitos – basically anything capable of destroying the town, their house, and even the brand new police car of “Clive” (David Alan Grier). Fortunately, he rolls a five, which brings them face-to-face with the long-lost boy (Robin Williams), covered in leaves and skilled at navigating the game from within. All they have to do is locate his former playing partner from years ago (Bonnie Hunt) and finish the game. How difficult could that possibly be? Besides all the destruction, the game also introduces “Van Pelt” (Jonathan Hyde, doing a lot with one role), who’s armed with a shotgun and seems determined to add them to his collection of trophies. Now they need to survive, complete the game, and hopefully correct some past mistakes. It's not particularly suspenseful, but Williams, Dunst, and the energetic Pierce keep this fast-moving family adventure entertaining. I always thought Williams tended to go a bit overboard with his performances, but the kids and Hyde work well as a contrast to that, and each dice roll easily introduces a fresh chaotic situation for them as they try to reach the finish line. It’s enjoyable family entertainment that feels like a mix of "Smokey and the Bandit" and "Tarzan."
