Joe Johnston directed Jumanji, adapting Chris Van Allsburg’s short story of the same name. The movie features Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, Bradley Pierce, and Jonathan Hyde, and centers on a strange board game that releases jungle dangers with each roll of the dice. Players must complete the game to restore order. Critics at the time described the plot as straightforward and suggested it seemed designed primarily to showcase special effects. Despite this, Jumanji became both a box office success and a beloved family film, popular enough to inspire a sequel—Zathura (2005)—as well as an animated television series and another board game. The movie largely depends on its visual elements for entertainment; the cast members, though capable and pleasant, seem to move from one dangerous dice roll to the next. However, labeling the film superficial is inaccurate. It touches upon themes like inadequate parenting, social pressure, loss, and intimidation, while also exploring the effect of a missing child on a community. One has to question whether those critics were truly engaged during their screenings. It’s certainly chaotic fun for families, but it possesses value in its writing as well. The action sequences and humor alone justify seeing it. It earns a 7/10.
