Caesar (Louis Calhern), victorious over Pompey’s forces, is back in Rome to widespread celebration. While a fourth term as consul and the position of dictator for life appeal to his desires, they worry those who believe this marks an advance toward unchecked authority. Cassius (John Gielgud) leads among these wary individuals, and along with Brutus (James Mason) and Casca (Edmund O'Brien), decides that serious measures are necessary to stop him from becoming a king. They also have to consider Mark Antony (Marlon Brando)—Caesar’s closest advisor and an honorable military leader. The Ides of March arrive as predicted, history unfolds, and this is when the adaptation of Shakespeare's play truly captured my attention. Until then, Brando’s character was mostly unseen, but he skillfully uses the crowd to create a chance for revenge against those who murdered Caesar, along with Octavius (Douglas Watson), allowing them to seize control of the empire. Many consider Gielgud the greatest Shakespearean actor of the 20th century, and his performance here is powerful and stirring; his character seems only marginally less ambitious than Caesar, and even more self-serving. However, it’s James Mason who makes the biggest impact. His portrayal of Brutus conveys a sense of principle, honor, and integrity—he appears to be the only one not primarily motivated by personal gain. Both actors deliver some truly remarkable speeches with skill and precision. Brando has just one significant moment, delivering his eulogy, but it’s an impassioned address to the assembled crowd that is both perceptive and inflammatory. Joseph L. Mankiewicz directs a well-produced and paced dramatization of violence, deception, and arrogance, allowing those in front of the camera to showcase their talents for presenting a somewhat shortened but still intricate script. Greer Garson and Deborah Kerr also make notable appearances, and we are presented with an engaging story of intrigue and power that I found very enjoyable.
