I have a feeling Renée Zellweger deserves an Academy Award for her truly remarkable portrayal of Judy Garland. She’s genuinely excellent and manages, to some degree, to give those of us who missed seeing Garland at the height of her career a glimpse into what it was like to witness a genuine – albeit imperfect – star. It's undeniable that there will never be anyone exactly like the original, but I don’t believe Renée is attempting an imitation here; anyone who tried would almost certainly fail. That’s what made her performance so compelling for me—it felt deeply personal. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie lacks substance; Jessie Buckley (who was good in "Wild Rose") makes a notable impression, but beyond that, it feels rather ordinary.
