The narrative proves to be the film’s biggest flaw within an otherwise entertaining package. The problem is, in movies, the plot tends to carry a lot of weight, so I can't really consider Judge Dredd a triumph. While the basic idea works well, that isn’t necessarily something the movie deserves praise for, since it draws its story from the comic books—2000 AD specifically. Casting Sylvester Stallone as Dredd and Rob Schneider in a supporting role might not have been ideal choices. However, they aren't so bad that Judge Dredd becomes unwatchable, and there are other positive aspects to compensate for it. Even though the film was released in 1995, it has that distinctively eighties look of a bleak future—everything is dark, signs glow with neon, and everyone looks like an androgynous punk or goth. I’m really fond of that aesthetic, so it does add to my enjoyment of Judge Dredd (though again, not because it's original). It might not be the description you would anticipate for a movie filled with violence, offering a sense of guilty pleasure as a science fiction film, but Judge Dredd is just charming! I have a particular fondness for the ABC Warrior, and even considering everything, the film is pleasant to watch without taking it too seriously (though doing so seems pretty much impossible). It’s true that enjoying Judge Dredd involves laughing at it more than with it, but that still makes it enjoyable. 51% -Gimly
