I don't usually go for humor that's crude or overtly sexual, but when it’s clever, inventive, and genuinely original, I notice—and this first film from writer-director Adele Lim certainly grabs attention right from the opening line and doesn’t let up. This fast-paced comedy centers on four young Asian women (Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Sabrina Wu, Stephanie Hsu) as they embark on a wild road trip across China that gradually falls apart while constantly throwing them into a series of loud, hilarious, and chaotic situations. Throughout the story, the film consistently delivers big laughs, living up to the description of being something audiences haven’t really experienced before. It's true that the plot occasionally pushes believability and there are moments that feel somewhat familiar or overly sentimental, but these smaller issues are easily outweighed by its positives, like a strong group of performers, well-managed timing, and striking, colorful production design. Given the type of jokes it makes, people who are easily offended might want to avoid it (though it’s genuinely difficult not to laugh, regardless of how traditional one's tastes may be). “Joy Ride” didn’t have a lot of promotion or buzz beforehand, but it’s among the funniest comedies in recent memory and stands out as a highlight during what has been an otherwise pretty lackluster summer at the movies. Be prepared to laugh—a lot—with this film.
