It’s less a depiction of combat and more focused on what it feels like to simply endure! Sam Claflin delivers a powerful and affecting portrayal as "Capt. Stanhope," a man struggling with alcoholism while in charge of a group of soldiers stationed in a French trench during the Spring of 1918. The men are aware that an attack—either from their side or the enemy—is likely, but the timing remains unknown, creating a pervasive atmosphere of anxiety and dread that tests everyone’s resolve. This constant threat has taken its toll on Stanhope; he's far from resilient, and his mental strength is stretched to its limit as he attempts to keep his men focused and under control. The rest of the unit—including Paul Bethany ("Uncle"), who strives to assist his friend through daily hardship while also encouraging the other officers and enlisted personnel, and a very inexperienced Asa Butterfield ("Raleigh")—work to maintain order as an impending disaster grows ever closer. This isn’t a film packed with action; there's surprisingly little actual fighting shown. Instead, it offers a moving psychological study of the immense pressure placed on people by uncertainty, discomfort, and worry, alongside their courage, integrity, and camaraderie, which resonates strongly when you are watching from your living room. Saul Dibb effectively creates suspense, and his depiction of this trench warfare setting is genuinely heartfelt. The audio quality could be improved—it’s sometimes hard to understand the lines—but that's a minor flaw in an otherwise well-scored and worthwhile film.
