I honestly didn't believe a film largely set within a World War I trench and dugout could be so captivating, but Journey’s End managed to do it. With the possible exception of Captain Stanhope’s sometimes over-the-top behavior, the actors delivered solid performances with the believable script. There was a feeling of impending doom, like something out of an ancient tragedy, and I anticipated certain plot points beforehand, yet that didn't lessen my enjoyment of the narrative or its presentation. The sense of an approaching assault brought to mind Hitchcock’s observation about suspense—that it wasn’t simply about an explosion onscreen, but rather the uncertainty surrounding one. When the attack finally occurred, it felt surprisingly understated. It has sparked my curiosity about how this story was originally staged for theater, given the constraints of a stage setting. I noticed there are recordings available online, and I might look into watching one.
