I didn’t have a strong attachment to Jonah Hex before, but having a few of the older comics from the seventies made me curious about this 2010 movie, particularly because Megan Fox appeared so striking in the promotional images, haha. "Jonah Hex" brought back memories of those countless spaghetti Westerns from the sixties and seventies—films like "Django" and Sergio Leone’s “Man with No Name” trilogy—though it feels more contemporary and enjoyable. As you'd anticipate, the film has a very comic book aesthetic, and the filmmakers did an impressive job bringing the title character's horribly scarred face to life; it’s really like stepping directly into the panels of the comic. Josh Brolin is adequate as the central figure. And Megan Fox demonstrates in her smaller role that she was among Hollywood’s most attractive actresses at the time. With a running time of just 82 minutes, the narrative is straightforward and moves quickly, which I appreciate since many movies drag on too long. The writers did attempt to add some layers, which deserves recognition. If it had more depth and scope, I would have given it a higher mark. As it stands, "Jonah Hex" feels like a spaghetti Western that's genuinely watchable. Picture the flair and style of “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” brought into 2010, but shorter, without any boring parts, and with less simplistic characters, and you’d have something close to what "Jonah Hex" offers. A real standout is the amazing metal soundtrack by Marco Beltrami alongside Mastodon; it's worth seeing the movie just for that music, seriously. Filming took place in Louisiana, with some additional scenes shot in California. GRADE: B
