I was taken in by my mother; she’s a kind person who treats me with respect. Taika Waititi has been on a strong run lately, and that’s well-deserved because he clearly possesses a unique comedic sensibility. ‘Jojo Rabbit’ is a World War II satire that manages to be both funny and unexpectedly sad. It contains joy, fear, affection, and animosity all within one film. Waititi understands the limits of humor and how it can shed light on difficult subjects. Although it appears strange at first glance, there's something special about it if you dig a little deeper. New actors Roman Griffin Davis and Thomasin McKenzie are the focus amidst a large ensemble cast. Their comedic instincts, emotional depth, and performances as a whole were remarkable. Archie Yates also resembles a younger version of Nick Frost. Scarlett Johansson is enjoying an excellent year, and she delivers another outstanding performance here. Sam Rockwell consistently gives great performances, and this one is no exception. His portrayal of a closeted homosexual Nazi officer is funny, but also carries weight when considered more carefully. Rebel Wilson was the weakest performer in the cast, though. I didn’t find her believable as this character; she seemed to be relying on familiar comedic routines that I don't particularly enjoy. Taika Waititi not only directed and wrote the film, but also appears as Jojo’s imaginary friend and idol – Adolf Hitler. Apparently, he didn’t need to do any research for the role because he considers Adolf ‘a f**ing c***’. Regardless, the concept is quite strange and interesting. While it's silly and entertaining, I think it could have been omitted. He essentially vanishes from the movie at one point before reappearing during the ending. There were moments when it felt like it was trying too hard to emulate a Wes Anderson film in terms of its visual style, unusual humor, and overall atmosphere. Influence is fine, but there came a time when it wasn’t developing its own identity. Despite my criticisms, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. It's charming and lively, and I appreciate that a movie like this exists.
