It’s safe to say I didn't enjoy this one very much. Dick Powell plays the main character, a casino manager who initially seems tough, but it doesn’t take long to see he’s actually quite gentle. He had an affair with the considerably younger wife (Ellen Drew) of his business associate (Thomas Gomez), and she is set on winning him back. The question is, how far will she go? Simultaneously, Lee J. Cobb portrays a detective investigating the puzzling suicide of a woman whose sister (Evelyn Keyes) arrives in town, drawing Powell’s attention. The elements of crime are frequently overshadowed by the poorly developed romantic plots, which really slow things down and turn it into something resembling a melodrama with just a hint of menace. Powell delivers a decent performance, as does Cobb as the brooding but capable police officer—though ultimately, I found it rather lackluster.
