It’s easy to see how, when this movie was made, 2021 might have felt incredibly distant, but experiencing it today reveals that it doesn’t quite connect as well as one might hope. Keanu Reeves is undeniably handsome, and that’s really the film's strongest attribute. The plot—a familiar story of humanity reliant on technology facing a corporate takeover—offers nothing particularly fresh. Our hero, along with some like-minded individuals, must retrieve a microchip implanted in his brain to prevent total destruction. While the movie moves at a brisk pace, and Reeves does what he can to stay ahead of his pursuers, who aren't especially convincing, the script lacks energy and is often hard to hear. The other actors—a group of lesser-known performers, musicians, and Dolph Lundgren as the main villain—seemingly just fulfill their roles without much imagination. Perhaps it’s unreasonable to judge a film from 25 years ago through current standards, but like many others in its genre, neither the acting nor the special effects have aged gracefully. It wasn't impressive when it was released, and that assessment hasn't changed.
